December Board of Education Meeting Synopsis

December Board of Education Meeting Synopsis

At the Board of Education Meeting on December 8, 2025, board president Mr. Luis Alcantara welcomed the community to the final school board meeting of the calendar year.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sharon A. Dungee introduced Cordello Elementary School student, Miss Faith Tillett, to accept a certificate from the Board of Education. Miss Tillett was recognized for her sense of kindness and for taking one of her schoolmates' suggestions to Dr. Dungee's Student Council Roundtable Meeting to add waffle fries to the school lunch menu! Dr. Dungee connected with School Nutrition Director Mr. Paul Carlozzo to discuss Miss Tillett's suggestion. In just two short weeks, the popular waffle fries were added as a choice on the lunch menu district-wide!

Dr. Dungee was recently a guest on LI News Radio's 'Spotlight on Long Island Schools' with host Mr. Robert Vecchio. Dr. Dungee spoke with Mr. Vecchio (who is also Executive Director for Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association) about the impacts charter schools have on local public school districts. They also talked about the positive results Central Islip School District is having under Governor Kathy Hochul's statewide bell-to-bell ban on cell phone use in schools.

Mr. Alcantara and the Board of Education approved the establishment of a $100,000 Scholarship Fund in the name of former CI Schools Superintendent Dr. John Leach.

As he closed the meeting, Mr. Alcantara invited residents to check the District website for a full list of remaining winter concerts. He also announced that winter recess begins 12/23 and schools will reopen on January 5th, 2026.
